HEALTH AND genetics
With over 45 years of experience behind her, Lois definitely knows her stuff. A successful breeder is one with many years of practice.
When it comes to the finer aspects such as health, genetics and temperament, Lois grades each dog via a complicated score system (1 - 10) throughout its life - ONLY breeding the best. Hips, elbows, eyes, temperament and a range of other aspects are tested and scored. The puppies are monitored and trained as they grow and mature, and results are noted and modified at Lois' home - Schwarz Kennels. If a puppy is not suitable for breeding it is often trained and sold as a pet to loving families.
For her, health and temperament are of primary importance, appearance comes in second. This is why Lois' program is so successful - she is not rushing the process. Lois only breeds the best stock, sometimes only 1 or 2 puppies per litter are used for breeding. Reaching the AA Breed Standard will take some time, and in all honesty, 'slow and steady will definitely win the race'.
Lois has written and published several books concerning the Alsatians and they are available for purchase:
